"Read, read, read." —William Faulkner
At Oakridge, we believe that students read more and are likely to develop a love of reading if they are given the opportunity to choose what they read. "An essential aspect of becoming a real reader is knowing yourself as a reader— made possible through wide reading driven by access to abundant books and personal choice (Wilhelm and Smith, 2014; Miller, 2013; Tatum, 2009, 2013; Allington and Gabriel, 2012). We encourage student choice in reading - as children’s book author Neil Gaiman notes, "Do not discourage children from reading because you feel they are reading the wrong thing. Fiction you do not like is a route to other books you may prefer.”
Happy reading this summer and please contact Mrs. deWinter with any questions about the summer reading: pdewinter@theoakridgeschool.org.
The Oakridge Library will be open through June and July: Mondays - Thursdays from 9-12 for checkout, STEM and craft activities, and story time.
