Parent Tips

Raising Readers!

  • Storytime - Attend a regular storytime at your local library or bookstore.

  • Read a book as a family; schedule this time so it happens consistently. Discuss the story at the dinner table or at bedtime.

  • Try audiobooks. Free to borrow at the public library!

  • No book shaming:  Find what interests your child and go with this genre or format whether you are reading together or reading independently. Side-by-side reading is still reading and time with your kiddos!

  • Get recommendations from your child's teacher, librarian, bookstore employees or staff at the public library.

  • Model your own love of reading.

  • Newborns count!  Read aloud every day. What matters are the words, the rhythm, the sound of your voice, and that you enjoy yourself!

  • As for toddlers, be sure to make reading together a positive and regular experience.

  • Reading should not be perceived as work.

  • Graphic novels are getting better and better and are often a gateway to more reading.  Children still learn reading skills when enjoying books with more visuals.

  • Fill your house with reading material: magazines, "coffee table" books, novels, picture books, comics...and  nonfiction is a GREAT option!

  • Start a parent-child book club. Give it a clever name!

  • Go see the book adaptation to film after reading the book.

  • Dedicate at least 15 minutes a day to read with your kids!
