No book shaming: Find what interests your child and go with this genre or format whether you are reading together or reading independently. Side-by-side reading is still reading and time with your kiddos!
Get recommendations from your child's teacher, librarian, bookstore employees or staff at the public library.
Model your own love of reading.
Newborns count! Read aloud every day. What matters are the words, the rhythm, the sound of your voice, and that you enjoy yourself!
As for toddlers, be sure to make reading together a positive and regular experience.

Graphic novels are getting better and better and are often a gateway to more reading. Children still learn reading skills when enjoying books with more visuals.
Fill your house with reading material: magazines, "coffee table" books, novels, picture books, comics...and nonfiction is a GREAT option!
